Enna Burning by Shannon Hale

Sequel to "The Goose Girl" that features a stronger main female character. Fascinating exploration of magic and self-mastery. Good character development. Engaging story. Didn't care for the (fortunately) short prisoner/captor romance (Yes, I realize she was under a spell. I simply found the scene uncomfortable.)

The Runes of the Earth by Stephen R. Donaldson

Epic fantasy adventure that traverses time and space. Compelling characters. Very cerebral (You'll need a dictionary on hand). Surprisingly coarse language mixed in with heady vocabulary (Not your father's Thomas Covenant). However, much better than Second trilogy. Less despair. More wonder. I enjoyed it.

Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

Worth reading if only to see how much Hollywood has butchered this story over the past century
